Do you feel like you’re on the bridge to nowhere? Many of us are crossing one kind of bridge or another now. Winning a new job, changing careers, starting a business or taking on creative projects are journeys. They ask you to reach, risk and to move from where you now are to where you want to be.
Bridges represent transition. Their purpose is connection, to shuttle you between points A and B. We all know that between A and B is the middle. It feels like it goes on forever - the days between the layoff and the new job, the business launch and when the first dollar comes in. It may appear that nothing is happening, despite your best efforts. Exasperating.
Although it may not seem like much consolation, the middle is a key part of the process. Be patient. This time will create space for new thoughts and changes in your perspective. If you’re receptive, some surprising gifts will reveal themselves.
Transitions - the creative middle
- A new idea occurs to you - something you hadn’t really considered before.
- An interesting opportunity presents itself.
- You run into an old friend out of the blue who suggests you contact someone who could be helpful.
- You come across an interesting news item that captures your curiosity.
- You discover new resources that will really help you, meeting an immediate need.
A time of uncertainty is also one of opportunity
This can be an emotional and disorienting time. Quite uncomfortable. The key is balance. Take special care of yourself. Do your part each day - your research, work your personal marketing plan. Action leads to action. It also helps ease some of the fear and frustration. Never give up!
Today’s question
We’d love your comments. If you’re currently in work life transition between points A and B, what has been the most helpful way you’ve found to manage the middle?
