Have you lost sight of your goal or become weary in its pursuit? Whether you’re looking for a new job or growing a small business, there will be times when you feel out of kilter, unfocused, unmotivated. It’s the nature of transition - ebb and flow. Times of burnout and disinterest will be followed by spurts of energy, renewal, excitement. You can manage through very well using these key strategies.
- Go back to your source of energy - often. You have an end goal in mind. Imagine vividly what it will look and feel like when you’ve achieved your dream. Draw energy from that vision. Rededicate yourself continually to that goal.
When it feels like nothing is happening, try not to indulge the “blue funk.” Gloomy thoughts and feelings can play us. Fear and doubt have particularly loud, troublesome voices.
- Take special care of yourself during this time. You are worthy of care and attention! You’re not a different person just because you’re in work transition. Be good to yourself.
What energizes and centers you? Tapping into what you deeply value will feed and replenish. Do you find energy in your faith, belief in your goals and aspirations, time spent with loved ones, music, art, gardening, reading, outdoor recreation and connecting with friends?
Sound self-care practices - healthful eating, exercising and sleeping well will help you handle the stress inherent in this process. Pace yourself, as if you were a long-distance runner. Balance physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
- Ask for help and support. Put your personal supports in place — rally your friends, participate in groups, get together with colleagues. This is your infrastructure. Avoid isolation. Don’t ask someone to “do for you,” but graciously accept encouragement and feedback. Conversely, being helpful to other people is an amazing tonic.
