Whether you’re currently in a work search or wanting to hold on to the job you have, invest in yourself for the long term. Test your marketability with this 5-point checklist. If you find any areas wanting, create an action plan to improve them. You are the product you’re selling. Be proactive to remain competitive.
1. My current employment serves my goals.
Assess your current or prospective situation. Aside from the financial side, do you gain in these ways?
- Are my responsibilities in line with my strongest capabilities?
- Am I developing new skills and meeting the right people?
- Is there room to grow? Or is this a good stepping stone?
2. My education, certification and training are current.
Lifelong learning is the key to staying marketable.
- Do I need a degree or certification?
- Do I regularly attend professional association events, seminars, classes?
3. My skills and industry knowledge are up to date.
Staying current is required for ongoing employment. Could you qualify for an equivalent position with a competitor? If not, what do you need to do?
- Am I technically proficient in the latest software?
- Do I know my industry’s trends and major players?
4. My networking and communication activities are constant.
Strategic networking helps cultivate business relationships. Word-of-mouth is the most powerful tool to win opportunities and referrals.
- Do I routinely develop new contacts, nurture existing ones?
- Do I meet in person with people important to me rather than relying on email?
5. My life and work are in balance.
Long-term marketability relies on a balance between life and work—emotionally, physically, intellectually, financially, and spiritually.
- Do I follow sound self-care practices?
- Do I give equal attention to my relationships and my work?
Is there room to improve? Follow up with an action plan and set goals targeting the areas you’d like to strengthen. Managing your career proactively will help you stay marketable. Your livelihood depends on it.
