FIND THE WORK YOU WANT, New Resource Guides Job Seekers to Self-Discovery

OAKLAND, CALIF.-Growing numbers of people are actively pursuing jobs but are experiencing long periods of unemployment. The U.S. Department of Labor’s January 2009 news release reports the average duration of unemployment at 19.7 weeks. Twenty-three percent of unemployed persons report they have been out of work 27 weeks or longer.

As a consequence of the economic downturn, many people are taking this opportunity to take stock of their working lives. Whether they are currently in the job-search market - by choice or by circumstance - or they see an employment change in the near future, many are revisiting their personal world of work and are now asking, “What do I really want to do next?”

“Because this question can feel too big to tackle, many people hesitate and get stuck as they look for new jobs,” says Marty Silberstein, author of Finding the Work You Want: A Practical Guide to Help You Discover Your Values, Skills, and Marketability (Night Owl Companion Publishing). “The key to solving what seems a perplexing puzzle is to first understand your values, skills and preferences and then to evaluate potential workplaces using this yardstick. Greater self-knowledge paired with an understanding of the current marketplace will lead to better-informed decisions and to a higher probability of success.” Silberstein, founder of Night Owl Companion Publishing in Oakland, Calif., says that “the new world of work calls for managing your career differently. Self-understanding, flexibility, and continual preparation and reinvestment in yourself mean ongoing marketability.”

While self-assessment may feel like a daunting task, it need not be painful. Finding the Work You Want: A Practical Guide to Help You Discover Your Values, Skills, and Marketability leads you through easy-to-follow exercises. Topics include 12 guiding principles that help focus the job search, seven key workplace trends, how to acid-test your marketability, and how to identify and prioritize values, preferences and skill sets. With this accessible workbook you will create a values map and translate those values into workplace requirements. A personal “decision maker” worksheet will help you evaluate prospective job opportunities. “Working wisely” tips are sprinkled throughout. How to take your talent to the marketplace and an excellent resources list complete this timely, practical workbook.

FOR LOVE OR MONEY - MORE ARE RE-ENTERING THE JOB MARKET
A New Resource Helps You Manage the Transition

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA-Increasing numbers of people are heading back into the job market after long absences - some by choice, others out of necessity. Having stopped because of childbirth, illness, divorce, eldercare, premature retirement or business difficulties, many had vanished from the employment radar. Now they are looking for work, the most common reasons being money, healthcare benefits, mental stimulation, and staying productive. But they are returning with a host of questions and insecurities.

“Returning to the workplace after an extended absence can feel intimidating and overwhelming,“ said Beth Witrogen, author of Re-entering the Workplace: Seven Questions You Must First Ask and Answer. She explained, “People typically don’t know where to start an effective job search. Today the world of work and its technologies have changed. In addition, this challenged economy has created added competition. Those re-entering the marketplace, whether to look for a sustaining job or to resume a career, must have a keen sense of themselves and their goals. They must now use more creative work search strategies.”

The U.S. Department of Labor shows that one-third of highly qualified women take time out of the workforce. While 93% of them want to return to work, only 74% actually do. Some may abandon their efforts out of discouragement, because they are unfamiliar with the tools and resources needed to look for a new job effectively in this competitive market.

Witrogen suggests that re-entrants can become fully prepared and confident by first understanding their motivations, fears, and preferences. Re-entering the Workplace: Seven Questions You Must First Ask and Answer poses critical questions that help structure thinking, lower resistances, and clarify direction. Practical next steps for an action plan, helpful tips and an excellent resources list round out this timely, practical resource.

HOW TO FIND THE BEST PLACES TO WORK IN LESS TIME WITH LESS STRESS
New Resource Helps Jump-Start a Successful Job Search

OAKLAND, CALIF.—Growing numbers of people now find themselves in the job market - whether by choice or by circumstance. Many have enjoyed long tenures at stable companies, until now, and have not had to look for a new job in years. Feeling overwhelmed - mentally, emotionally, physically and financially - job seekers are in a quandary about how to begin their search. And though Internet technologies provide powerful new tools, thoughtful and creative search strategies are more essential than ever.

“Endlessly trolling the online job boards is not a sound work search strategy,“ said Marty Silberstein, author of Your Work Search Companion. “While job boards should be one tool in the search, job seekers who rely on them exclusively miss most opportunities by using this passive approach,” says Silberstein, founder of Night Owl Companion Publishing in Oakland. “Most positions are not advertised. Particularly in this business climate, employers who post openings on large job sites are deluged instantaneously with hundreds of both qualified and unqualified applicants. From the recruiter’s point of view, this selection process is unwieldy and costly. Their objective is to source qualified candidates as efficiently as possible.”

Your Work Search Companion helps people jump-start their job search. It presents a sound strategy and guides job seekers to the best online and traditional resources, saving them valuable time and effort.

Well-researched and accessible, Your Work Search Companion distills massive amounts of information into quality recommendations. Topics include tips for a successful job search, how to use proven strategies, tapping the most credible online and offline information, using online groups and social networks to your advantage, networking by design, maximizing professional associations, discovering the library, working with recruiters, work style options, and how to approach prospective employers for best results. An excellent resources list completes this timely, easy-to-follow practical resource.
